NORDIS, The Nordic Observatory for Digital Media and Information Disorder, aims to strengthen media literacy in the Nordic region in various ways.
Media literacy is defined as the ability to access, manage, understand, integrate, communicate, evaluate, create, and disseminate information safely and appropriately through digital technologies.
Digital Information Literacy involves a dimension of active and civic engagement with the digital world and promotes active citizenship.
During the second funding period of NORDIS we will build on the Digital Information Literacy guide that was developed and coordinated by Faktabaari during the first period of NORDIS.
Furthermore, NORDIS will develop media literacy campaigns, create media literacy materials and courses that will target both the general public and vulnerable groups.
The media literacy work will be led by Faktabaari and will be supported by fact-checkers, researchers and external experts.

The Finnish fact-checker Faktabaari, with the support of the University of Helsinki, developed a Digital Information Literacy Guide for citizens in the digital age features ways to understand and pedagogically approach the complexities of digital information disorder.
It is a basic guide for citizens in the digital age. The guide can serve as a learning material in educational contexts or inspiration for experts addressing various challenges of information disorders to wider public.

The Guide will be further tested and supplementary educational material developed with the NORDIS fact-checkers, supported by the research partners, for the benefit of the citizens of their respective countries and in cooperation with the EDMO literacy community.
In 2023, Faktabaari produced the FactHacker video series, summarizing the main findings from the Guide for a broader audience.
In the second phase, the University of Helsinki piloted an academic Digital Information Literacy course for master level communications students. More information about the course can be found here, and the curriculum and course outline can be accessed here.
