The purpose of this report is to summarize the latest technology in fact-checking tools in Europe and the USA.
The authors aim to build a knowledge base to inform and guide future work in the NORDIS project.
The report includes an examination of how fact-checking practices have expanded with various technical tools and provides an overview of available or new technology.
The report concludes with a brief analysis of the gaps in available technology regarding the workflows of journalistic fact-checking and the potential for further development.
Among other findings, the authors conclude that current technology offers limited functionalities. Therefore, full automation of journalistic fact-checking is not yet possible. For instance, reviewing information and determining whether it is true or false is a challenging task.
Many of the challenges faced by fact-checkers depend on the political situation in a given country. The same applies to gathering information from certain governments or dealing with a lack of transparency and access to information.
One of the limitations of attempts to use AI solutions for fact-checking is the lack of data, as the number of fact-checking articles worldwide is relatively small.
There are also general challenges in implementing AI technology within organizations. These include a lack of human and financial resources, misinterpretations, and unrealistic expectations regarding the technology.
